
ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival announces its Official Selection for the 12th edition of the festival which will take place on 21-23 April 2017 in Paris, France.
ÉCU 2017 will showcase 73 films from 29 countries ranging from features, shorts, documentaries and animations to student films and experimental works. ÉCU’s Official Selection represents the very best in independent filmmaking from around the world and the filmmakers will be competing in 14 categories for 25 awards, including the prestigious title of ‘Best European Independent Film 2017.’ In addition, a record number of 28 female directors will be in competition for the ‘Excellence in Women’s Filmmaking’ award at this year’s edition of the festival.
BACK ON MY FEET (Greece) directed by Theo Papadoulakis. A portrait of a nation in trouble. Greek faces showing the pain of the financial and political crisis in their country.
SOLDIER BEE (United Kingdom) directed by Alex Hardy. A woman, a mother, a soldier, Jodie Baxter is all of that. After being injured in Afghanistan, she is back home, coping with everyday life. She will find out how troublesome a scar can be.
LUCY IN MY EYES (Canada) directed by Megan Park. The Canadian actress (THE SECRET LIFE OF AN AMERICAN TEENAGER and WHAT IF) directs a touching story. On the eve of her wedding, Lucy has a conversation with her six year old self, a sweet and beautifully framed illustration of what growing up means.
GROOM’S BLOCK (Turkey) directed by Ilker Savaskurt. „Groom’s Block” is slang in Turkey for prison sections holding those accused of serious sex crimes, where men judge each other and lash out justice daily. Using violence as a language, the director captures the abrupt and harsh environment prisoners are surrounded by everyday.
RE-EVOLUTION (Spain) directed by David Sousa Moreau. When life knocks you down you can either choose to resign or to resist…now it´s time to change the World. An extremely low budget, yet a remarkable independent filmmaking masterpiece.
NIGHT-SHIFT (Lebanon) directed by Hisham Sharafeddine. An innovative and interesting snapshot of daily life, where music and photography intertwine. Two thieves, one mini-market; bad timing, just see what happens.
I GO BACK HOME-JIMMY SCOTT (Germany) directed by Yoon-ha Chang. Grieving the loss of his wife and driven by the search for meaning in his life, the German composer Ralf Kemper risks his fortune and sanity by realizing his life-long dream to produce a record for his idol. Featuring Jimmy Scott, an amazing cultural icon and musician, „I go back home” is an ode to his stunning musical talent and unique personality.

As well as the film screenings, festival attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an array of professional workshops, including scriptwriting, editing and directing, as well as attend ‘Meet-the-Directors’ discussions. There is also a full program of live music hosted by ÉCU’s partner Access Film-Music. As a result of ÉCU’s commitment to the discovery, promotion and projection of independent films, it is often referred to as the European equivalent of the Sundance Film Festival.
The 2017 European Independent Film Festival will take place on the April 21 – 23 at the Cinema 7 Parnassiens, 75014 Paris.
