Five years of immense fatigue repaid by a world premiere and two awards at Cannes. That is the journey of Salvo, an Italian debut film from Sicilian writers-directors Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza. They will share their success story with the audience of 4th Visegrad Film Forum 2015 in Bratislava (11th – 14th March).

At VFF, Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza will join three-time Academy Award winning sound mixer Christopher Newman, independent programmer and adviser Ludmila Cviková and András Nagy, renowned Hungarian director of photography.

Students of film schools and film enthusiasts are encouraged to sign up at www.visegradfilmforum.com. The deadline for application is March 7th, 2015. VFF’s partner Hostel Blues offers special discount prices for accredited participants (9,90 € per night). For more information see: www.hostelblues.sk.

Salvo tells a story about a Sicilian mafia hitman, who spares the life of a blind sister of one of his victims, and his life becomes inextricably linked with hers. The film premiered in 2013 at La Semaine de la Critique of the Cannes Film Festival, winning both top prizes Grand Prix and Prix Révélation. Since Salvo was Grassadonia’s and Piazza’s first feature and it was not a comedy, it was quite hard to finance it in Italy. While developing the project, they attended numerous workshops around Europe. It was at Torino Film Lab they obtained their first significant production contribution and other financing soon followed. They did not get the amount they’d hoped for, but they decided to go with what they had and made it all the way to Cannes. VFF will screen Salvo and Matthieu Darras, Head of Programmes for the Torino Film Lab, will moderate the discussion with Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia.

Ludmila Cviková will share insight into the world of film festivals. Given the current developments in the film industry, she is convinced that filmmakers can use “tailor-made” personal advice. Ludmila Cvikova was advisor for several international festivals, including Karlovy Vary, Locarno and Sarajevo. She was programmer at IFF Rotterdam for 15 years, scouting new talents and selecting films from Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. Most recently she worked for Doha Film Institute in Qatar as a Head of Film Programming and Deputy Director of the Qumra Doha Film Festival and jury member for the Doha Film Institute’s Film Grants. She is currently independent film curator, script, film funding and festival strategies advisor based in Amsterdam.

The most recent addition to VFF lineup is András Nagy, Hungarian director of photography known for his unique visual experiments and style. Nagy cooperated with Kornél Mundruczó (Johanna, Pleasant Days) and Szabolcs Hajdu (White Palms, Off Hollywood, Bibliothéque Pascal, Mirage). He has won numerous Hungarian awards including Béla Balázs Award (2001), Hungarian Film Week’s best director of photography award (2000, 2006). In 2011 he received the Golden Reel Award at Tiburon International Film Festival for Bibliotheque Pascal.
